understanding ielts listening
Introduction
A prerecorded audio is used to test students' listening skills in IELTS LISTENING test. Various types of english accents - British accent, American accent, Australian accent can be used in the audio.
Purpose of Listening
Ielts Listening module is designed to test three types of listening skills. The skills are :
a. the ability to find out the main topic of a conversation and the ability to find out the specific information of a conversation
b. the dexterity to uncover opinions, attitudes of the speaker and the purpose of the speech.
c. the skill to deliver a better speech.
Time of Listening Module
Listening audio is run for 30 minutes in IELTS LISTENING test. Extra 10 minutes are given to transfer the answers to the listening answer sheet.
Listen Test Sections:
Ielts Listening Module consists of four sections:
Section One: A conversation between two people is heard in this section. The topic of this conversation is various social contexts such as conversation in an accomodation agency, conversation about a birthday party, conversation about buying a car etc.
Section Two: Here, Only one speaker speaks. This discourse is about various social facilities, new presentation, etc.
Section Three: In this section of the Listening test, three or more than three people speak together. This dialogue is about home tasks or research projects of the educational institutions.
Section Four: Here, Only one speaker speaks. This speech is as like as a university lecture.
Note : Listening audio is run for once. But the answer of the first question is repeated.
Listening question types
The following types of questions may appear in the listening test -
a. multiple choice questions
b. label a plan, map or diagram
c. fill in a form
d. complete a table
e. complete a flow-chart
f. give short answers.
Marking: Every question takes equal one marks in IELTS listening. So, 40 questions take 40 marks. But then, the acquired marks out of 40 are converted to a mark out of 9.
